HALITOSIS

Halitosis is the name given to the ugly smell in the breath that comes from the mouth or nose and disturbs both the person and the people around him. Bad breath, which sometimes reveals as a result of diseases, sometimes harmful habits, sometimes problems in the gums, causes many problems in social and private life if precautions are not taken. There are many reasons for bad breath. The main reason is bacteria that start to accumulate on the teeth immediately after brushing, and generally tooth and gum diseases. However, bad breath can also be encountered in stomach, intestine, lung and throat cancer.

What are the causes of bad breath (halitosis)?

Sinus and lung-borne infections, diabetes (acetone-like odor), such as liver failure and systemic discomfort, dry mouth, poor oral hygiene, tobacco and alcohol products also are among the main causes of bad breath.

Some diseases that can cause bad breath (Halitosis) are as follows:

  • Decayed tooth
  • Gum infection
  • Mouth sores
  • Nasal discharge
  • Throat, sinus, lung infections
  • Chronic sinusitis
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Diabetes (diabetes)
  • Reflux
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Pregnancy (changes in hormone levels)
  • Change of menstrual cycle in women
  • Some medications
  • Antesthesia
  • Sjogren's syndrome (causes dry mouth)
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Chemotherapy, radiotherapy

My mouth stinks; what should I do?

Halitosis treatment is based on the principles of paying attention to oral hygiene, brushing your teeth and tongue, cleaning between your teeth, and treating gum inflammation(gingivitis). Patients with bad breath should be encouraged to reduce smoking, stay away from harmful substances, eat at regular intervals, visit dentists every six months.
