ORTHODONTICS

ORTHODONTICS

Orthodontics is a branch of science that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of jaw, tooth and facial disorders. With orthodontic treatment, in addition to having a beautiful smile, chewing ability and healthy teeth are obtained. A healthy and beautiful smile is an important factor in perceiving a person as an influential and easy-to-communicate person.

Orthodontic treatment helps the development of the jaw in young children and helps the teeth to be in the right positions, while for adults, it provides correction of the crowding and closing irregularities that exist, as well as facial disorders of the jaw. The main purpose of orthodontics is to prevent the occurrence of disorders related to the teeth, jaw and face area.

What is protective orthodontic treatment?
The purpose of these treatments is to prepare enough space for new teeth so that permanent teeth can remain properly.
For this purpose, placeholders that protect the location of early lost baby teeth are prepared. It is also recommended that children prone to tooth decay are monitored by pedodontists.

What is preventive orthodontic treatment?
These are the treatments performed by various portable tools in order to create a space for permanent teeth or prevent problems that may develop due to factors such as finger sucking, abnormal swallowing and tongue sucking.

How is the orthodontic treatment done?
Orthodontic treatment is performed with the help of various fixed or removable apparatuses applied to the teeth or jawbone. The form of these apparatuses is not optional; it is determined by the specialist doctors according to the requirements of the treatment. Due to the program technique that plans the process, 3 different apparatus of different layer thicknesses are installed at the one-week interval at each treatment stage.

What causes misaligned (crooked) teeth?
When our teeth are not compatible with our jaw size, they are lined up crooked or uneven to settle. This problem occurs after the deciduous teeth come out and the main reasons for these are:

  • Depending on hereditary factors,
  • Congenital anomalies (such as cleft lip and palate),
  • Incorrect functions (such as mouth breathing),
  • Harmful habits (such as finger sucking, prolonged use of pacifiers),
  • Early loss of deciduous teeth due to caries
  • Movements of teeth caused by gum problems (periodontological problems),
  • As a result of the fact that wisdom teeth cannot find enough space
  • Lying position
  • Traumas such as tooth grinding or falling, crashing

How long does the orthodontic treatment last?
The duration of orthodontic treatment depends on many factors. However, the most important factor affecting the duration of orthodontic treatment is the severity of the orthodontic problem. Although the average duration of treatment is 18 months, the duration of treatment can vary between 8-30 months, depending on the severity of the problem.

Is there an age restriction for orthodontic treatment?
There is no age restriction in orthodontic treatment. Starting treatment at an early age (7-10 years) reduces the duration of treatment. Before the age of 12 years is the best time for jaw and skeletal problems.

What are some orthodontic procedures?
In orthodontic treatment, wires called brackets (dental braces) are used. With the advancement of technology, aesthetic solutions such as brackets fixed to the back of the teeth, transparent plaques and ceramic braces brackets are offered.

Fixed orthodontic appliances
Fixed orthodontic appliances are usually started at the age of 11-12 with the emergence of permanent teeth after all deciduous (milk) teeth have fallen off. Fixed orthodontic treatment is performed with the brackets that are affixed on the teeth by the dentist and the wires between these brackets. Fixed orthodontic treatments can be applied to patients of all ages. Brackets (braces) are divided into metal, transparent (Porcelain) and internally applied (Lingual orthodontics).

Why is fixed orthodontic treatment done?
The purpose of orthodontic treatments is to line up the teeth properly and to make the jaw and mouth structures look as they should. Fixed orthodontic treatment is the fastest treatment method used to guide dental development and jaw positions in children. With the fixed orthodontic devices that need to remain in the tooth during the treatment, the teeth are placed in the position they should be. These applications are also made to prevent caries and gum disease, prevent tooth fractures and trauma, eliminate tooth loss, and ensure oral hygiene.

How is fixed orthodontics done? What are the treatment stages?
During applying orthodontic treatment, X-rays of the patient's teeth and jaw are first taken, and the positions and ailments of the teeth are determined. Fixed orthodontics, which is recommended to start no later than 11-12 years of age, is performed with special techniques for each patient. It is applied to the tooth by using fixed braces, brackets and tires. Brackets placed on the teeth with a special glue are fixed on the tooth by Beam, and then wires are attached. After creating a force and tension between the teeth, a gradual change in the location of the teeth is achieved. In order to achieve the targeted result, the brackets are checked regularly, in monthly periods.

What are the advantages of fixed orthodontics?

  • It is the fastest and most durable braces treatment.
  • It can be designed as transparent and invisible according to the patient's aesthetic concerns. With fixed orthodontics, space is made for narrow and upper jawbones.
  • Upper respiratory tract disorders are eliminated with fixed orthodontic treatment. With fixed orthodontics, jaws and teeth grow in a healthy and proper position.
  • The cavities between the teeth are filled in a healthy way.
  • Fixed orthodontics prevents tooth fractures and loss.
  • It provides easier orientation of teeth, especially in childhood.
  • It is more economical than other braces.

Fixed orthodontic treatment time
While fixed orthodontic treatment lasts for 1.5-2 years depending on the severity of tooth crowding and jaw disorder, results are obtained in as little as 6-8 months in simple cases. For this reason, it is necessary to go to the dentist when the defects in the tooth and jaw structure are first noticed.

Clear (Transparent) Aligners (Invisalign)
Dental misalignments can also be corrected with clear aligners without using braces. The clear plastic aligners are custom-made to fit your mouth with the help of digital orthodontics treatment. The most important advantage of wireless orthodontic treatment is that while correcting the misalignment of your teeth, your orthodontic treatment cannot be understood by any outside person. Here, movement occurs in the teeth by applying certain forces to the teeth with clear aligners. Clear aligners need to be replaced on certain days.

Can anyone get Invisalign?
It is an orthodontic treatment that can be applied to adults, young people, and children. However, whether you are suitable for Invisalign treatment will only become clear after your dentist’s examination. Moderate and mild tooth crowding can be treated with Invisalign. An orthodontic treatment that requires tooth extraction can also be treated with Invisalign. Only your dentist can determine tooth extraction with Invisalign.

What are the advantages of transparent plaque (clear aligners) treatment?

  • Absolutely not noticeable from outside,
  • No pain, aches, tenderness or any other disturbing sensation is experienced during the treatment,
  • It can be removed with a single action whenever it is needed,
  • Your tooth movements are analyzed with successive plates, and improvement is followed in a digital environment,
  • Does not cause speech problems (slurring, stuttering, loss of voice letter, etc.)
  • Protects against psychological problems caused by braces in early age groups.
  • The duration of treatment is short compared to braces treatment.

How many trays (aligners) should I wear? How many hours a day will I wear the aligners?
The duration of the treatment and the number of trays to be used vary according to the level of dental crowding and the amount of movement of the desired teeth. Each transparent tray corrects the teeth by 0.25-0.5 mm and must be worn for 18-20 hours a day for 14 days. At the end of the second week, the teeth take the shape of the tray, and the clients start wearing the second tray, on which there is some further correction, and for 14 days, the teeth take the shape of the new tray, so that the teeth are straightened after the use of a series of trays (aligners).

Will people notice Invisalign aligners in my mouth?
